During the general debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his support for India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, on Saturday.
Starmer stated, “We want to see permanent African representation on the council, Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany as permanent members, and more seats for elected members as well.”
French President Emanuel Macron has also backed India's bid for permanent United Nations Security Council seat, while delivering his speech at UN General Debate.
President Macron of France addressing the UN General Debate on 25th September, he said, "France is in favour of the Security Council being expanded. Germany, Japan, India and Brazil should become permanent members, as well as two countries that Africa would designate to represent it."
India has been advocating for a permanent seat in the UNSC for several years, with highlighting its contributions to peacekeeping missions, rising global influence, and its status as the world’s largest democracy. The Quad leaders underscored the importance of comprehensive reform of the UNSC, and the need to make the body more inclusive, representative, transparent, and democratic.
Earlier, The United States has also expressed its support for India’s longstanding push to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), while Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's concluding trip to the US for the Quad summit being held in Delaware.
India's backing at UNSC was reaffirmed in a joint statement issued by the leaders of the Quad, comprising the US, India, Japan, and Australia following their summit in the US.
