US Vice President JD Vance has said that Ukraine is in no position to win the war against Russia, saying it would be the objectively naïve thing to expect a bigger nation’s collapse if fighting continues for several more years.
Vance, who is a US Marine Corps veteran, has long contended that American support for the war in Ukraine puts an additional burden on US financial resources and diverts large funds that could be used for priorities in domestic sectors.
“If this doesn’t stop, the Ukrainians aren’t winning the war,” Vance said during an interview that aired on Monday.
“I think there’s this weird idea among the mainstream media that if this thing goes on for just another few years, the Russians will collapse, the Ukrainians will take their territory back, and everything will go back to the way that it was before the war. That is not the reality that we live in,” the vice president said.
“You could have millions more people killed if this thing goes on for another few years, and it could risk escalating into a nuclear war. It has to stop,” Vance added.
He said US negotiators are “making progress,” despite the challenges dealing with the leadership of both countries, Vance added.
“Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with Ukrainians. Sometimes you’re incredibly frustrated with the Russians,” Vance said. “And sometimes you just want to throw your hands up, but that’s what President Trump doesn’t let us do.”
The comments have come in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing that his troops would observe a three-day ceasefire starting on May 8 to commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory over Germany in World War II.
Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky responded by accusing Moscow of “manipulation” and calling for an immediate 30-day ceasefire.
