The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is closely monitoring the developments in Bangladesh and has expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives during the recent protests. Guterres has called for calm and restraint from all parties involved, stressing the importance of a peaceful, orderly, and democratic transition.

In a statement released by his office, Guterres reiterated his solidarity with the people of Bangladesh and called for the full respect of their human rights. He emphasised the necessity for a full, independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into all acts of violence that have occurred during the unrest.

The political situation in Bangladesh has become increasingly volatile following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid escalating protests. These demonstrations, primarily led by students demanding the abolition of a quota system for government jobs, have evolved into broader anti-government protests.

The protests turned deadly over the weekend, with at least 135 people killed in various incidents across the country, including police firings, mob beatings, and arson. The Dhaka Tribune reported the tragic loss of life and the serious injuries sustained by many protesters. Hospitals in Dhaka have been inundated with victims of the violence, including those with gunshot wounds.

Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening, flying into the Hindon Air Base near New Delhi. Her future plans remain uncertain, with speculation that she might proceed to London.

Her departure from Bangladesh was met with celebrations in the streets, as people took to public spaces in cities like Chittagong to express their joy. Reports from the Dhaka Tribune described a festive atmosphere, with processions and the distribution of sweets among the celebrants.

In Dhaka, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has proposed the formation of an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus to navigate the country through this period of turmoil. This proposal is seen as a potential solution to the ongoing political crisis, aiming to establish stability and address the demands of the protestors.

The central government of India has taken note of the situation, convening an all-party meeting to discuss the developments in Bangladesh. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to brief the attendees on the current scenario and the implications for the region.

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has also expressed concern over the safety of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. VHP International President Alok Kumar urged the Indian government to take every possible step to ensure the safety and protection of minorities in Bangladesh.

He highlighted the reports of attacks on religious places, business establishments, and homes of Hindus and other minority communities in the wake of the unrest.

As the situation continues to evolve, the international community is watching closely. The call for a peaceful resolution and respect for human rights remains paramount. The people of Bangladesh are seeking stability and a path forward that respects their rights and aspirations, while the interim government and international stakeholders work towards a solution to restore peace and order in the country.
