The US State Department on Tuesday called on Pakistan to respect the right of Pakistani people to protest and assemble peacefully and also respect human rights and freedom.

During a press briefing, US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller said while responding to the question on the current state of affairs shaping up in Pakistan, as Imran Khan supporters had called for a nationwide protest.

As per PTI, the Pakistanis are rallying for the fulfilment of three agendas: “revocation of the 26th amendment and the restoration of the constitution, return of the stolen mandate, and release of all political prisoners.”

Meanwhile, the PTI workers, along with several thousand Imran Khan supporters, were on their way to Islamabad when the police and agitating protesters clashed, resulting in the detention of thousands. During the action, one policeman was killed and several people were also injured.

When asked about the present turmoil due to suicide bombings, sectarian clashes, political chaos, and protests, Miller replied, “So, in Pakistan and around the world, we support freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association. We urge protesters to exercise their responsibility to demonstrate peacefully and refrain from violence, and at the same time we call on Pakistani authorities to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and to ensure respect for Pakistan’s laws and constitution as they work to maintain law and order.”

PTI founder and former prime minister of Pakistan has been in jail for the past 470 days, as per recent reports.

Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, on Monday asked for her husband’s release as his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party continued to move towards the country’s capital, Islamabad, in the wake of ‘Final Call’ protests.
