Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's People's Action Party (PAP) has clinched a resounding victory in the country’s general election, winning its 14th consecutive mandate since first taking power in 1959.
The PAP captured 87 of 97 parliamentary seats, improving on its 2020 performance and securing 65.6 per cent of the popular vote—up from 61.2 per cent previously.
Following the victory, Prime Minister Wong expressed gratitude to voters for their renewed confidence.
“Singaporeans have given the @PAPSingapore a clear and strong mandate to govern. I am humbled by and grateful for the faith you have placed in me and my team,” he posted on social media platform X.
In a follow-up post, he called for unity: “So let’s stand as One Team Singapore—to confront the storms ahead together and secure a brighter future for all of us. We will involve Singaporeans in this journey to shape our future. We will engage and listen—because every voice is important.”
Wong also extended respect to his political opponents, acknowledging their spirited campaign. “The Opposition, in particular the Workers’ Party, fielded a strong slate of candidates and gave us a tough fight. I respect the Opposition presence in Parliament and will continue to take their views and suggestions seriously,” he wrote. “Ultimately, the bigger contest is not between political parties, but between Singapore and the challenges facing us.”
Lawrence Wong, who entered Parliament in 2011, rose steadily through government ranks. Before becoming Prime Minister, he held portfolios in the Ministries of Culture, Community and Youth; National Development; and Education. He also served as Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and co-chaired the Multi-Ministry Taskforce that spearheaded the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The election result reaffirms PAP’s entrenched position in Singapore’s political landscape and gives Wong a strong platform to steer the nation through economic uncertainties and geopolitical flux.
