China is reportedly grappling with an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (HMPV), five years after the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports suggest the virus is spreading rapidly, with some hospitals reporting overcrowded rooms and overwhelmed crematories.
Although claims have surfaced that China has declared a state of emergency, this remains unconfirmed. HMPV is known to cause similar symptoms to COVID-19.
The human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can be fatal, especially for people with weakened immune systems or other health conditions. The mortality rate for HMPV LRD in these patients can range from 10% to 80%.
A social media post by an X handle, "SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)," stated: "China is facing a surge in multiple viruses, including Influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and Covid-19, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums. Children’s hospitals are particularly strained by rising pneumonia and 'white lung' cases."
Videos of the same were circulated on social media.
The National Disease Control and Prevention Administration has announced plans to set up laboratories for disease control agencies to verify and manage cases, according to a Chinese state broadcaster citing a government official during a news conference.
Data for acute respiratory diseases show a rising trend in overall infections during the week of December 16 to 22, according to an official statement released Thursday.
China is likely to face various respiratory infectious diseases in the winter and spring, said Kan Biao, another official, during the news conference.
Recent cases detected include pathogens such as rhinovirus and human metapneumovirus, with cases of HMPV showing an upward trend, particularly among those under the age of 14 in Northern provinces.
