US President Joe Biden (L), Muhammad Yunus (R), a Nobel laureate, is set to take oath as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on Thursday.


The United States has expressed its readiness to work with the newly appointed interim government of Bangladesh, as the nation navigates towards a democratic future.

 

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller conveyed the White House's stance on Wednesday.

 

"We continue to monitor developments in Bangladesh and have noted the appointment of Muhammad Yunus as the leader of the interim government," Miller stated during his daily news conference. "We believe the interim government will play a crucial role in ensuring long-term peace and political stability in Bangladesh."

 

In a separate statement, a State Department spokesperson emphasised the importance of respecting democratic principles and the rule of law.

 

"All decisions regarding the interim government should respect democratic principles, the rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people," the spokesperson said. "We understand Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus has agreed to lead Bangladesh's interim government. We stand ready to work with the interim government as it charts a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh."

 

Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel laureate, is set to take oath as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on Thursday. 

 

In a public appeal, Yunus urged citizens to remain calm and avoid violence, emphasizing the importance of this transition period.

 

Amid efforts to stabilise the situation, Army Chief Gen Waker-Uz-Zaman announced that the interim government will be sworn in at 8 pm on Thursday, with an advisory council comprising up to 15 members.
