Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, warned on Monday that around one crore Hindu refugees might enter the state from neighbouring Bangladesh in the coming days due to political unrest.
Speaking to the media during the Monsoon Session of the Assembly, Adhikari urged the people of West Bengal to prepare for the possible arrival of these refugees. "Hindus are being slaughtered in Bangladesh. The Councillor of Rangpur Nagar Parishad, Haradhan Nayak, has been murdered. Thirteen policemen were slaughtered at Sirajganj, out of whom nine were Hindus. Hindu residences at Noakhali have been torched," Adhikari said.
He called on Governor C.V. Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to engage with the Union government, citing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). "It has been clearly stated in the CAA that if any person becomes a victim of religious violence in Bangladesh, we must give them necessary shelter," he said.
Adhikari also expressed concerns that if the situation in Bangladesh does not improve within the next three days, the country could fall under the control of fundamentalist forces. "Be mentally prepared to provide shelter to one crore Hindu refugees. At least I am prepared for that," he said. He appealed to the Hindu population in West Bengal to offer refuge to the incoming Hindu refugees, as was done in 1971.
