West Bengal led the nation in electing the highest number of women candidates in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, with 11 women securing seats in the Parliament. This achievement highlights the growing participation of women in the political process, as the 18th Lok Sabha, with 543 total members, now includes 74 women representatives.
Among India’s largest states, Uttar Pradesh, which sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, elected the highest number of male candidates, 73. In comparison, West Bengal sends 42 MPs, with 11 of them being women.
The Election Commission’s Atlas-2024, released on Wednesday, also provides valuable insights into female participation in the electoral process. Maharashtra stood out as the state with the most women candidates, with 111 female contenders. Uttar Pradesh followed closely with 80 women candidates, and Tamil Nadu had 77.
However, despite these impressive numbers, 152 constituencies across the country did not feature any women candidates at all.
Several states and Union Territories made notable strides in electing women to the Lok Sabha. Both Tripura and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (DNH and D&D) achieved an impressive 50 percent female representation among their elected MPs.

Delhi came next with 28.6 per cent women MPs, followed by Chhattisgarh with 27.3 percent and West Bengal with 26.2 per cent.
Another significant development in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was the shift in voter participation. For the second time in India’s election history, female voter participation surpassed that of male voters at the national level.
Female voter turnout reached 65.78 per cent, slightly higher than the 65.55 per cent male voter turnout, marking a notable 0.23 per cent difference in favor of women.
These trends underscore the growing role of women in both electoral participation and representation, highlighting the evolving political landscape in India.
