Jamshedpur Police Save 162 Children from Flooded School.

In a swift and coordinated effort, Jamshedpur Police on Saturday rescued 162 children who had been stranded at Lav Kush Residential School, located within the Kovali police station limits, due to severe waterlogging caused by incessant rainfall.

Taking to social media, Jamshedpur Police confirmed the operation: “Under the Kovali police station, 162 children stranded at Lav Kush Residential School due to heavy rainfall were successfully rescued by the Jamshedpur Police and handed over to their families.”

The rescue came as Jharkhand continues to experience widespread rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting further heavy showers over the coming days. The IMD has warned of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas, especially across southern and central districts, through 1 July.

According to the daily bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi, monsoon activity remains vigorous across the state. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected to continue at most places till 5 July.

On 29 and 30 June, isolated parts of south and central Jharkhand may experience extremely heavy rainfall, while heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds — reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h — are expected in north-western and north-eastern districts.

The ongoing weather pattern is being driven by a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, along with an associated cyclonic circulation.

This system is likely to move in a west-northwestward direction, affecting several districts in Jharkhand. Meanwhile, the monsoon trough currently extends through Bihar and West Bengal, further intensifying rainfall activity in the region.

In the last 24 hours, the downpour has been particularly intense in East Singhbhum district. Baharagora recorded the highest rainfall at 306.8 mm, followed closely by Ghatshila with 298.4 mm and Chakulia with 127.6 mm.

In Ranchi, the state capital, 11.4 mm of rain was recorded, with the maximum temperature settling at 29.7°C — 1.5°C below normal.

The IMD has also issued alerts for 1 and 2 July, predicting very heavy rainfall in north-western and parts of north-central Jharkhand, along with heavy rainfall in some northeastern districts. Thunderstorms are likely to persist across the state throughout the week.

In Ranchi, the forecast indicates a generally cloudy sky with spells of heavy to moderate rainfall through 1 July, followed by scattered thundershowers. Day temperatures are expected to remain between 26°C and 28°C.

So far this monsoon season, Jharkhand has recorded 81% above-normal rainfall, with Ranchi district witnessing a significant 198% surplus.
