According to a report submitted by the Kerala Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 20-year-old veterinary student Sidharthan JS, whose body was discovered hanging inside a bathroom at a college hostel in Wayanad, Kerala, endured continuous torture for 29 hours before his death.
The police report, cited by The Indian Express, reveals that Sidharthan, a second-year student at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, was subjected to both physical and mental torment by his seniors and classmates, ultimately driving him to take his own life.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) assumed control of the investigation into the death of 20-year-old veterinary student Sidharthan JS and dispatched officials to Wayanad on Saturday (April 6), according to reports.
Sidharthan's family had accused fellow students, including members of the CPI-M's student organisation SFI, of subjecting him to ragging, prompting their demand for a CBI inquiry.
On March 1, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan visited the residence of the late student Sidharthan JS to convey his condolences to the grieving parents.
Following the opposition's outcry in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed a CBI investigation into the death of JS Sidharth, a second-year student at the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Husbandry University in Pookode, Wayanad.
According to The Indian Express report citing police documents, Sidharthan endured severe ragging inflicted by his classmates from February 16 (9 am) to February 17 (2 pm). He was subjected to torture and struck with a belt.
"As he is so mentally stressed, he felt that there is no option for him other than suicide, he committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of the men’s hostel between 12.30 pm and 13.45 pm on February 18," said the Indian Express report and cited police documents.
“Police had initially registered a case of unnatural death, but during the investigation conducted so far, it is understood from the report produced by the anti-ragging squad of the college, from the statement of the dean of the college, from the statement of the medical officer, who conducted an autopsy and from the statement of the other witnesses, Sidharthan, was ‘physically and mentally tortured’ by some senior students and classmates,” the report further said.
