3 Apache attack helicopters on way to India, Army induction soon

Three AH-64E Apache helicopters are slated to be inducted into the Indian Army by July 22 in Jodhpur, enhancing close air support capability along the western frontier.

(In picture) AH-64E Apache helicopters, designed for close combat and deep precision strike missions, will now bolster India’s western front as Army Aviation readies for new induction.

The Indian Army is preparing to induct the first batch of three AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, with the aircraft expected to reach Jodhpur by late Sunday or early Monday, following a delay of two months. The formal induction is likely to take place on July 22, a senior defence official privy to the development informed.

These helicopters, which represent the most advanced attack rotorcraft in operational service globally, will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Army Aviation Corps. A Joint Receipt Inspection (JRI) will precede the formal handover.

The current deployment is part of a six-unit order placed under a $600 million deal with Boeing in February 2020, approved by the Indian government. This delivery follows the earlier induction of 22 Apache helicopters by the Indian Air Force under a 2015 contract.

The three helicopters will be stationed in a newly raised Army squadron based in Jodhpur. The location, strategically important for operations along India’s western frontier, has been selected for its proximity to potential high-threat areas.

Unlike the Indian Air Force’s fleet, which primarily supports broader aerial operations, the Army’s Apaches are tailored for close air support missions in synergy with ground forces. The move is being seen as part of the Army’s doctrine to ensure rapid and integrated combat aviation response under its direct command.

Boeing has described the AH-64E Apache as an aircraft equipped with “the latest communications, navigation, sensor, and weapon systems.” The helicopter is fitted with the Modernised Target Acquisition Designation System, enabling targeting in all visibility conditions.

Its combat armament includes a 30 mm chain gun, precision-guided Hellfire missiles, and 70 mm rocket pods, offering robust multi-target engagement capabilities. The helicopter’s Longbow radar system, mounted above the main rotor, can detect, track and prioritise threats without exposing the aircraft.

Notably, the AH-64E is also fitted with crash-worthy landing gear, reinforced rotor blades, and high-performance engines, allowing it to operate in the harshest of battlefield environments. Its low-altitude flight capability and rapid strike orientation make it ideal for asymmetric warfare.

“This order will expand the Indian Army’s capability to provide integrated combat aviation support to land forces,” Boeing had stated following the 2020 deal.

With over 17 nations operating Apache helicopters, including the United States, United Kingdom, Israel and Egypt, India now joins the ranks of countries that deploy these cutting-edge systems for both offensive and defensive operations.

More than 1,200 Apaches have been delivered worldwide, making it one of the most battle-proven platforms of the modern era.

The remaining three Apache helicopters under the Indian Army’s current order are expected to follow later this year, completing the delivery cycle.
