The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has decided not to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Instead, the party aims to concentrate on the Delhi elections, seeking to avoid any confusion among voters that could potentially split the anti-BJP votes in those states.
This decision reflects AAP’s desire to strengthen its position within the INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties aimed at countering the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Sources close to the party have indicated that while the Maharashtra unit of AAP is eager to participate in the elections for organisational growth, the leadership at the top is unlikely to approve such a move. The focus remains firmly on Delhi, where the party believes it can make a significant impact without diverting attention elsewhere.
The party’s strategy centres around maintaining clarity and unity among voters in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, as any division in anti-BJP sentiment could hinder the opposition's chances against the ruling party. AAP’s National General Secretary for Organization and Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak recently held a crucial meeting at the party's headquarters to discuss booth preparations for the Delhi elections.
This gathering brought together various party members from state to booth levels, emphasising the importance of fortifying the party's structure ahead of the elections.
Pathak reiterated the party's readiness for the upcoming assembly polls in Delhi, highlighting the need to strengthen the already robust organisational framework. He urged party workers to be vigilant against any potential conspiracies that might arise from the BJP as the elections draw nearer. The emphasis was on maintaining focus on the needs and concerns of the residents of Delhi, rather than getting distracted by external factors.
The assembly elections in Delhi are anticipated to take place in early 2025. In the previous elections held in 2020, AAP secured an impressive 62 out of 70 seats, leaving the BJP with only eight seats.
This success has fueled AAP’s confidence, but party leaders, including National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, have advised caution. Kejriwal reflected on the recent election results in Haryana, highlighting the crucial lesson that overconfidence can be detrimental. He urged party workers to work diligently and remain grounded as the Delhi assembly polls approach.
Kejriwal’s remarks underline the significance of every election and the challenges that come with it. He stressed that no election should be taken lightly, and the party must prepare thoroughly to maintain its stronghold in Delhi.
The upcoming elections will not only test AAP’s organisational capabilities but also its ability to rally support against the BJP, which remains a formidable opponent.
As AAP navigates this critical phase, its decision to focus solely on Delhi is strategic. By doing so, the party aims to consolidate its efforts and resources to ensure a decisive victory in its home ground.
The leadership's commitment to strengthening the INDIA bloc is also a key aspect of this approach, as it seeks to unify opposition forces to challenge the BJP effectively.
