In his renewed tenure, Shah's immediate priority will be the implementation of three newly enacted criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023.
These laws, effective from July 1, are set to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act. Shah introduced these reforms last year to modernise and replace the outdated British-era legislation, aiming for a more efficient and effective legal framework.
Shah's first term as Home Minister in the second Modi government saw significant policy shifts, including the abrogation of Article 370 and the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Known for his methodical approach, Shah's tenure has been characterised by decisive policymaking and a focus on strengthening national security and justice systems.
In addition to his legislative achievements, Shah has played a crucial role in curbing Maoist violence and fostering peace in the northeastern states through strategic peace accords. His efforts in these areas have underscored his influence in Indian politics and his commitment to national security.
Shah's rise in the BJP is marked by his reputation as a master organiser. Under his leadership as the party's general secretary, the BJP and its allies secured a remarkable 73 seats from Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 elections.
