Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to lead the ‘Anti-Terror Conference-2024’ on Thursday, a two-day event designed to strengthen India’s approach to countering terrorism.

The conference will focus on fostering cooperation among various stakeholders, with the aim of developing a unified strategy to combat terrorism under the principle of a ‘whole of the government’ approach.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is hosting the event, and it aims to shape future counter-terrorism policies and strategies. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) emphasised that the discussions will centre on enhancing coordination among law enforcement agencies, central agencies, and other stakeholders involved in security. The goal is to create a cohesive response to the growing threats posed by terrorism.

Senior police officials, officers from central agencies, and experts in law, forensics, and technology will come together to address critical issues such as the legal framework for counter-terrorism, the challenges of prosecution, and the role of emerging technologies.

One of the main objectives of the event is to explore international legal cooperation and formulate strategies to dismantle terrorist networks operating across India.

The MHA stated that the conference will prioritise developing synergies between various agencies and stakeholders. The aim is to ensure coordinated action across government departments in the fight against terrorism.

This collaboration will help in formulating effective policies and responses that can tackle terrorism more efficiently. The ministry pointed out that the deliberations would also focus on the evolving legal landscape in counter-terrorism, particularly concerning investigations and prosecutions.

The two-day conference will also highlight the importance of sharing best practices and lessons learned from previous counter-terrorism operations. Experts will discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies in the field of national security.

The role of these technologies in identifying, tracking, and dismantling terror cells will be a key topic of discussion. Additionally, international cooperation on counter-terrorism will be explored, with a focus on strengthening legal frameworks that enable nations to work together in the fight against global terrorism.

One of the primary concerns that will be addressed at the conference is how to improve the legal framework for prosecuting individuals involved in terrorism-related activities.

The discussions will delve into the difficulties faced in prosecuting terrorists and the need for more effective legal tools to ensure convictions. This includes considering the adaptation of laws to meet the challenges posed by the evolving nature of terrorist activities and their networks.

The MHA also noted that the conference has become an important platform over the years, bringing together not just operational forces, but also technical, legal, and forensic experts who play a crucial role in countering terrorism. These experts and agencies come together to exchange ideas and strategies that improve the overall response to terrorist threats.

The annual conference has thus grown into a vital event for building cooperation among different branches of government and security agencies. It serves as a forum for addressing national security concerns and identifying emerging threats that may require new approaches.

The collaboration of various experts in law enforcement, technology, and legal fields is essential to combat terrorism in today’s complex and rapidly evolving security environment.

The Ministry of Home Affairs reiterated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government is committed to eradicating terrorism from the country.

The government follows a strict zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, aiming to ensure the safety and security of all citizens. This commitment was reinforced with the organisation of this conference, as the government continues to take strong measures to combat terrorism through coordinated efforts.
