Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on Monday presented the state budget for the financial year 2025-26 in the assembly, outlining a total expenditure of ₹2.63 lakh crore with a deficit of ₹620.27 crore.
The budget aims to boost economic growth and social welfare while maintaining fiscal discipline. One of the key highlights is the exemption of professional tax for individuals earning up to ₹15,000 per month, benefiting over 1.43 lakh taxpaye₹and increasing their disposable income.
The state government has allocated ₹36,114 crore for capital expenditure, the highest ever in Assam’s budget, to accelerate infrastructure development and economic progress.
Education and employment generation have also received significant focus, with ₹250 crore earmarked for college infrastructure and ₹835 crore set aside for employment creation through the Assam Medical Services Corporation.
The tea industry, a vital sector of Assam’s economy, has been given relief through the extension of the tax holiday on green tea leaves for another two years.

Additionally, ₹500 crore has been allocated for the welfare of tea garden workers, ensuring better financial support for this key labour force.
In an effort to empower women, the budget includes ₹1,350 crore in financial assistance for 15 lakh women across the state. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to promoting gender-inclusive development.
The budget has been structured to ensure fiscal stability, with an overall outlay of ₹1,37,575 crore while maintaining a zero revenue deficit.
The Assam government’s financial plan for 2025-26 is designed to drive growth, improve public welfare, and support key sectors, making it a comprehensive roadmap for the state's progress.
