Atishi's new role as the Chief Minister of Delhi brings with it a host of challenges that will test her leadership abilities and political acumen. Her appointment comes at a crucial time for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and for the capital itself.

Atishi’s first statement as Chief Minister revealed both her appreciation for Arvind Kejriwal’s trust and the shadow she will work under. Kejriwal’s resignation has set the stage for Atishi’s leadership, but it also comes with significant pressures and hurdles.

The timing of Atishi's appointment is particularly challenging. With potential elections approaching either in October-November or February next year, her tenure may be cut short.

If elections are held as early as October-November, she will have only a couple of months to make an impact. Even if they are delayed until February, she will have just about five months to prove her effectiveness.

One of Atishi's most pressing challenges will be to navigate the upcoming elections. She must rally the party leaders and demonstrate her capabilities to the people of Delhi.

The AAP, currently facing legal troubles with several prominent members entangled in a liquor scam, adds another layer of complexity to her role. Although Atishi is not directly implicated in the scam, the ongoing investigations could influence her government’s functioning and public perception.

Atishi’s clean image may be one reason for her selection as Chief Minister. Analysts suggest that her appointment could be a strategic move to restore confidence, particularly among women, following controversies involving AAP. The party’s reputation was marred by the Swati Maliwal episode, and Atishi's leadership could be aimed at reversing this negative image.

Experts argue that the recent period of Arvind Kejriwal’s incarceration has affected the government's functionality. During his 178 days away, Delhi’s governance was disrupted. Atishi’s task now includes not only stabilising the administration but also restoring public trust.

With the AAP’s image taking hits, she will need to roll out significant initiatives to regain public confidence. Analysts propose that Atishi might focus on announcing and implementing major schemes, especially those aimed at benefiting women.

The challenges will not be limited to the political realm. Delhi’s infrastructure and public services have deteriorated, with issues like waterlogging and poor road conditions affecting residents.

Atishi will need to address these problems urgently. Coordinating with agencies like the Public Works Department (PWD) and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will be essential to improving Delhi's infrastructure.

Moreover, Atishi will have to manage a broad portfolio, including key departments such as Finance, Education, and Public Works. Handling these responsibilities effectively will be critical.

Her previous work in the education sector was well-regarded, but she now faces the additional challenge of enhancing Delhi’s health services and addressing other public needs.

Atishi’s appointment as Chief Minister comes with a blend of opportunities and challenges. Her leadership will be closely watched as she navigates through legal troubles, election pressures, and pressing public service issues.

The success of her tenure will depend on her ability to tackle these challenges head-on while restoring the faith of the people and maintaining the AAP’s political relevance.
