Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has hit back at allegations made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya, who claimed that Singh’s wife, Anita Singh, cast an illegal vote during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Malviya asserted that Anita, who is registered as a voter in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur, had voted in Delhi, rendering her vote invalid under electoral laws.
In a social media post, Malviya criticised Singh, saying, "Only an extremely mean man would humiliate his wife like this for the sake of politics." He shared an affidavit reportedly signed by Anita Singh, declaring her voter registration in Sultanpur, and accused Sanjay Singh of dragging his wife into the "quagmire of politics." Malviya further urged the Election Commission of India to investigate the matter.
Sanjay Singh responded by accusing the BJP of spreading lies and attempting to tarnish his family’s reputation. He clarified that his wife had applied to cancel her voter registration in Sultanpur as early as January 2024.
Singh also announced plans to file a defamation case against Amit Malviya and BJP leader Manoj Tiwari for making what he called baseless allegations.
The controversy arose after Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of orchestrating a campaign to delete the names of Purvanchali voters, including his wife, from the electoral rolls in Delhi.
Singh argued that such actions were part of a larger conspiracy by the BJP to undermine voters from the Purvanchal region, who form a significant part of Delhi’s electorate.
Addressing the media, Singh dismissed Malviya's claims, urging BJP leaders to utilise available digital resources to verify facts. "PM Modi talks about Digital India. I challenge the BJP to visit the Election Commission's website and check where my wife cast her vote. The truth is that she voted in Delhi during the Lok Sabha elections six months ago, in May 2024," he said.
Singh further alleged that BJP workers had submitted applications to cancel thousands of votes in various Delhi constituencies, flouting established procedures. He emphasised that the AAP would oppose these actions, labelling them an insult to the Purvanchali community.
"This is not just about my wife. It is about the systematic targeting of Purvanchali voters. We will not let this conspiracy succeed," Singh added.
