BJP leader Parvesh Verma recently launched a sharp attack on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, claiming that despite his efforts, Kejriwal would not be able to continue in his position due to the bail conditions imposed by the Supreme Court.
Verma, who is the BJP candidate for the New Delhi Assembly constituency, highlighted the restrictions that prevent Kejriwal from performing his duties as the Chief Minister.
According to Verma, Kejriwal’s bail conditions include a prohibition from entering the Chief Minister’s office, signing official documents, and even visiting the Secretariat.
This criticism comes after the Supreme Court granted Kejriwal bail on September 13 in connection with an ongoing money laundering investigation related to alleged irregularities in Delhi’s cancelled Excise policy.
Along with the bail, the Court imposed several conditions, including the furnishing of a Rs 10 lakh surety bond, as well as requiring Kejriwal to appear in court on each scheduled trial date unless exempted.
One of the key restrictions that Verma pointed out was that Kejriwal was not allowed to visit the Chief Minister’s office or engage in any official work. This, Verma argues, essentially makes it impossible for Kejriwal to function as the CM of Delhi.
Verma continued his attack by accusing Kejriwal of losing the support of Delhi’s slum dwellers. He claimed that during Kejriwal's visits to slums in the New Delhi constituency, residents have been greeting him with black flags, symbolising their discontent with his administration.
According to Verma, Kejriwal's government has failed to bring about any real development in these areas, and the only reason that some residents have been able to secure houses is due to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban), a central government initiative.
Verma’s remarks suggest that Kejriwal's promises have largely remained unfulfilled, with the BJP positioning itself as the party that is genuinely supporting the poor through government schemes.
Verma also shared a specific incident involving residents of Bhartiya Nagar in the New Delhi constituency. He claimed that these individuals had deposited Rs 70,000 with the Delhi government over a decade ago, hoping to secure housing through the Delhi government’s own scheme.
However, despite numerous attempts to meet with Kejriwal, these residents have not been given homes and continue to live in slums.
Verma’s story paints a picture of neglect and broken promises, further adding to the perception that Kejriwal’s government has not delivered for the people of Delhi.
The ongoing war of words between BJP and AAP during the Delhi Assembly election campaign has focused heavily on the issue of slum development and housing for the poor.
While Verma criticised Kejriwal for failing to improve slum conditions, Kejriwal has accused the BJP of being "anti-poor" and of planning to demolish slums in the city.
During a recent visit to a slum camp, Kejriwal alleged that the BJP wanted to demolish slums, leaving people homeless. He claimed that the Lieutenant Governor (LG) had changed land use rules to facilitate such demolitions.
In response to Kejriwal's accusations, Delhi LG V.K. Saxena rejected the claims as “complete lies.” Saxena clarified that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had not changed the land use rules for any colony and that no eviction or demolition notices had been issued.
Saxena accused Kejriwal of misleading the public with false information and warned that such baseless allegations could only harm the people of Delhi.
