Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan recently engaged in a recent diplomatic visit to Algeria, where he was warmly received as an honoured guest.
During this visit, General Chauhan took part in key events that underscored the growing bilateral ties between India and Algeria, particularly in the realm of defence and military collaboration.
One of the highlights of his visit was a guided tour of the Algerian Central Museum, a site that vividly encapsulates Algeria’s military history and the nation’s prolonged struggle for independence.
The museum’s exhibits span a remarkable timeline, presenting artefacts from the ancient Numidian era, through Algeria’s fight against colonial rule, and into modern times.
General Chauhan expressed admiration for the museum’s comprehensive display, which includes clothing, weaponry, and unique artefacts used by Algerian freedom fighters. He noted that the collection provides a deep insight into Algeria’s historical journey and its resilience, which continues to inspire many today.
In addition to the museum visit, General Chauhan attended the People’s National Army Military Parade and Ceremony, held in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Algeria’s Glorious Revolution.
This event, marking seven decades since the country’s liberation struggle, holds profound national significance for Algeria. General Chauhan was invited as a Guest of Honour by the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, an invitation that reflects the strengthening diplomatic and defence ties between the two nations. His presence at the parade is seen as a meaningful gesture to deepen military cooperation between India and Algeria.
This visit marks General Chauhan’s first official trip to Algeria, a milestone aimed at fostering closer ties and exploring areas of military collaboration between the countries. Both India and Algeria recognize the importance of such engagements in building trust, exchanging expertise, and enhancing mutual security efforts.
Prior to his departure, General Chauhan was welcomed by Ambassador Swati Vijay Kulkarni of India and General Hadjras Hocine from the Algerian People’s National Army Headquarters. Their presence highlighted the importance of this visit, which is expected to lay the groundwork for future defence partnerships and exchanges.
In addition to his diplomatic engagement in Algeria, General Chauhan also recently spearheaded an important development in defence technology back in New Delhi.
On Thursday, he and Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), jointly launched the Evaluating Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (ETAI) Framework and Guidelines. This framework aims to incorporate trustworthy AI into the Armed Forces, recognizing the transformative role that AI plays in modern defence systems.
In his address, General Chauhan underscored the urgent need for trustworthy AI applications in defence, especially given the recent global conflicts that highlight the strategic value of artificial intelligence in warfare.
He emphasised that these AI systems must be resilient against potential adversarial attacks and function reliably under varied conditions. He congratulated the Scientific Analysis Group for their dedication to enhancing the reliability and security of AI in defence, underscoring that this framework marks a crucial step towards the adoption of resilient and secure AI-driven defence systems.
