The government is preparing to take legal action against major e-commerce platforms for selling products without mandatory certification, according to sources. Companies such as Myntra, Meesho, Bigbasket, Amazon, and Flipkart are expected to face lawsuits following a series of raids conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) earlier this year in March.
During multiple inspections at Flipkart and Amazon warehouses, BIS officials uncovered over 11,000 products—including toys, kitchen appliances, and electrical equipment—that were being sold without the required BIS certification. These findings have raised serious concerns about consumer safety and regulatory compliance on these platforms.
Currently, the BIS is in the process of initiating legal proceedings under the BIS Act, 2016, in a magistrate court. The Act allows for stringent penalties, including fines of up to ten times the value of the non-compliant goods sold, and imprisonment for up to two years for the offending parties.
Earlier in March, the BIS had already filed two legal cases against Techvision International Pvt, a major supplier implicated in distributing non-certified products, citing violations of the BIS norms. This ongoing crackdown reflects the government’s resolve to enforce product safety standards and hold online retailers accountable for regulatory breaches.
