Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong met with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday evening to discuss the bilateral relationship between India and China. The meeting marks an important step in the diplomatic ties between the two countries.

In a post on X, Jaishankar shared, "Received Ambassador of China Xu Feihong this evening. Discussed our bilateral relationship and our common interest in its stabilisation and progress." He also wished Xu a successful tenure.

Xu Feihong, who arrived in New Delhi on May 10, has officially taken charge as the Chinese Ambassador to India. This makes him the 17th Chinese envoy to India and the first in over 18 months.

The previous ambassador, Sun Weidong, left his post in October 2022 during a period when India and China were working to manage their strained relations following the Ladakh border standoff in 2020.

Upon assuming his new role, Xu emphasised the longstanding historical and cultural ties between India and China. In an interview with China Global Television Network, he expressed his commitment to fostering deeper understanding and friendship between the two nations.

Xu said, "I will do my best to deepen understanding and friendship between the two peoples, expand exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and improve and advance the bilateral relationship."

He further highlighted the significant roles both countries play as the world's largest emerging markets and developing nations. "As President Xi Jinping said, if China and India speak with one voice, the whole world will listen; if the two countries join hands, the whole world will pay attention," Xu noted.

This meeting comes at a crucial time as both India and China look to stabilise their relationship and seek progress in various areas of cooperation. The conversation between Xu and Jaishankar is a step towards addressing the complexities and potential of the bilateral ties between the two neighbours.
