With fresh snowfall on the majority of higher reaches, including the famous Ski resort Gulmarg, the cold wave conditions further intensified in Kashmir Valley while the historic Mughal road remained closed for travellers amid intense snowfall on Sunday.
On one side, the cold wave conditions are disrupting normal life, while the fresh snowfall has brought joy to tourists visiting the Gulmarg in North Kashmir.
Official sources said that keeping in view the safety of passengers, Mughal Road has been closed for traffic movement, and the vehicles plying on this road were stopped at Behramgala and Hirpora on the Shopian side.
Deputy SP Traffic Rajouri-Poonch, Shiv Kumar, and Incharge Police Post Behramgala Sohan Singh said that, as predicted by the concerned department, fresh snowfall occurred at Pir Ki Gali, and authorities have now closed the road following snowfall. The road will be opened after improvement in weather and clearance of snow, they added.
The temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir have plummeted following the fresh snowfall in higher reaches.
The winter season in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is known for its extreme cold conditions with scenic beauty during winter.
The cold weather in Srinagar is also marked by “Chillai-Kalan,” 40 days of intense cold starting from December 21 to January 31—when temperatures are at their lowest and the region experiences the heaviest snowfall.
Srinagar offers both a scenic experience for the visiting tourists and a harsh but beautiful season for locals, with its blend of cultural traditions, scenic landscapes, and challenges by the cold conditions.
