The Dalai Lama, the supreme spiritual leader of Tibetans, turned 89 on Saturday.

He reassured his followers about his health, stating he is recovering from knee surgery and feels "physically fit," dismissing any rumours of ill health.

The Tibetan community in exile celebrated the occasion at the Dalai Lama's main temple in Mcleodganj, marking the event with festivities and prayers.

The revered Tibetan spiritual leader is currently recuperating in the United States following knee surgery.

"Recently I had surgery on my knee, which has given me some problem. However, I am recovering and have no problem at all now," the Dalai Lama declared in a video message, addressing speculations about his wellbeing.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate, celebrated globally for his efforts in popularising Buddhism, addressed concerns, "There may be people trying to confuse you about my health, saying that the Dalai Lama has gone to a hospital and is undergoing treatments, and so on, making my condition sound grave. You don't need to trust such misinformation."

Exiled since 1959, following China's military intervention in Tibet, the Dalai Lama remains a symbol of Tibetan autonomy and spiritual guidance.

His advanced age and health challenges have heightened the discourse on his succession among Tibetans, who face continued struggles for autonomy or independence from China.

Tibetan Buddhists hold the belief that their spiritual leaders reincarnate, raising crucial questions about the Dalai Lama’s eventual successor.

Approaching his 90th year, the Dalai Lama hinted at addressing these succession questions.

"I am nearly 90 now but I don't feel unhealthy, except for the slight discomfort in my legs. I would like to thank all my fellow Tibetans in and outside Tibet for your prayers on my birthday," he stated, acknowledging the natural decline associated with ageing.

Saturday saw tens of thousands of Buddhists and well-wishers worldwide gathering to celebrate his birthday, praying for his long life.

The Dalai Lama's enduring presence continues to embody hope for a return to Tibet for many of his followers.
