Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that Doordarshan will begin broadcasting news bulletins in Santali within a week. 

 

Ashwini Vaishnaw says, "Today, we got the good news that news should be broadcast in the Santhali language on Doordarshan so that all our tribal communities who speak the Santhali language can get the service of Doordarshan. From next week, the news bulletin will come in the Santhali language. once a week."

 

Vaishnaw, who also serves as the Railway Minister, made the announcement during a programme in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, where President Droupadi Murmu laid the foundation stones for six projects, including three rail lines. 

 

Murmu, the country’s first tribal president, hails from the Santali community. 

 

Santali, one of the 22 recognised languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, is spoken by over 70 million people in India. The language has significant speaking populations in Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura.
