Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at RajGhat on Sunday before visiting the Hanuman Mandir in Connaught Place. This series of visits was part of his final activities before surrendering at Tihar Jail, as per the Supreme Court's directive.
Kejriwal, along with his wife Sunita Kejriwal, Delhi ministers Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Raghav Chadha, Kailash Gahlot, and other AAP leaders, paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Following this, the Kejriwals offered prayers at the Hanuman Mandir, seeking blessings before his return to jail.
On May 10, the Supreme Court had granted Kejriwal interim bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections. He was asked to surrender by June 2. In a heartfelt message posted on X, the Delhi Chief Minister expressed gratitude towards the Supreme Court for the interim bail and shared his schedule for the day. "I am very grateful to the Hon’ble Supreme Court. Today I will surrender by going to Tihar," he wrote.
Kejriwal detailed his itinerary, which included paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, visiting the Hanuman temple, meeting with party workers and leaders, and finally heading to Tihar Jail. He urged his supporters to stay positive, stating, "If you are happy, then your Kejriwal will also be happy in jail."
Kejriwal's legal troubles stem from a money laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam. He had sought an extension of his interim bail, but the Supreme Court rejected his plea on Wednesday, advising him to apply for regular bail in the trial court.
On Saturday, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court reserved its order on Kejriwal's interim bail plea, which cited medical reasons. The court set June 5 for the pronouncement of the order, declining to pass an immediate decision as requested by his lawyer.
In a video message released on Friday, Kejriwal shared his thoughts on his impending surrender. He expressed pride in his actions, stating that he was going to jail to "save the country from dictatorship." He conveyed resilience and determination, saying, "They tried to break me many times, tried to make me bow down but I didn’t."
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in connection with a money laundering investigation involving alleged irregularities in the now-cancelled Delhi excise policy for 2021-22. His temporary release allowed him to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, but he now returns to face the legal proceedings.
