The Delhi Assembly elections took a dramatic turn in Kasturba Nagar as two individuals were caught attempting to cast fake votes. The Delhi Police acted swiftly and apprehended them at Savodaya Vidyalaya in the Andrews Ganj area.
According to police sources, both suspects are being interrogated to gather more details about the incident. The revelation has raised concerns over electoral integrity in a high-stakes election for the Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Congress.
Kasturba Nagar is witnessing a three-way contest, with AAP’s Ramesh Pehalwan, BJP’s Neeraj Basoya, and Congress’ Abhishek Dutt vying for the seat.
The allegations of voter fraud have added another layer of intensity to an already heated political battle. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as the investigation unfolds.
Meanwhile, the overall voter turnout in Delhi stood at 19.95 per cent by 11 am, as per the Election Commission of India. The North East district recorded the highest turnout at 24.87 per cent, followed by Shahdara at 23.30 per cent.
On the lower end, the Central district saw a turnout of just 16.46 per cent. Other districts, including South West, North, North West, and West, reported varying participation rates as polling continued.
Polling for all 70 assembly seats in Delhi commenced at 7 am amid tight security. A total of 699 candidates are contesting across the national capital, with key battles taking place in constituencies such as New Delhi, Jangpura, Kalkaji, Okhla, Mustafabad, Bijwasan, and Patparganj.
The elections hold significant importance for all major parties. AAP is aiming to retain power, having dominated the assembly in the past two terms.
The BJP, which has not governed Delhi for nearly three decades, is hoping to make a comeback. Congress, once a dominant force in the state, is struggling to regain lost ground after failing to win even a single seat in 2015 and 2020.
AAP is banking on its governance record, particularly in education, healthcare, and public services, to secure another term. The BJP is focusing on national policies and promises of improved infrastructure. Congress, meanwhile, is attempting a revival by appealing to traditional voter bases.
The counting of votes is scheduled for February 8, and the outcome will determine the future political landscape of Delhi.
