The Delhi Police have registered a case against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Amanatullah Khan for allegedly violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The case was filed after a video emerged showing him moving around his constituency, Okhla, with his supporters after the official campaign period had ended.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for South East Delhi confirmed the development on social media, stating that an FIR had been registered at Jamia Nagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Representation of the People Act (RP Act).
The police action comes at a time when Delhi is witnessing polling for its 70 assembly seats, with voting beginning early in the morning under tight security measures.
In a related incident, the police had earlier taken action against another AAP candidate, Atishi, for a similar MCC violation.
According to the South East Delhi DCP, Atishi was found with a group of 50-70 people and 10 vehicles at Fateh Singh Marg past midnight, violating election norms. Based on a complaint by the Flying Squad Team (FST), a case was filed against her at Govindpuri Police Station.
AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has strongly criticised these police actions, accusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) and Delhi Police of bias.
He alleged that their actions favoured the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and were aimed at disrupting the electoral process.
Kejriwal claimed that instead of ensuring a fair election, authorities were engaging in hooliganism and facilitating the distribution of liquor and money.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have also registered a separate FIR against AAP members Ashmit and Sagar Mehta. The two party workers allegedly obstructed and assaulted a police officer during a late-night gathering in Govindpuri.
The police stated that a Head Constable was recording a gathering when the AAP members interfered and physically assaulted him. A case has been filed under sections related to obstruction of public duty and assaulting an officer while on duty.
