In the lead-up to the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, Congress has unveiled a new health initiative called the 'Jeevan Raksha Yojana', aiming to provide families in Delhi with a health insurance cover of ₹25 lakh.
The announcement was made by former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who referred to the scheme as a “game changer” for the people of Delhi.
During a press conference, Gehlot compared the ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’ to Rajasthan's successful ‘Chiranjeevi Yojana’, a health scheme that has benefitted countless families in the state.
Gehlot expressed his satisfaction in launching this scheme in Delhi, highlighting the success of the Rajasthan model and his confidence that it would have a similar positive impact in Delhi.
According to Gehlot, while schemes like Ayushman Bharat offer health benefits, they have certain limitations that his scheme would address by providing comprehensive coverage for all families, with no restrictions.
The Congress leader also spoke about the party's renewed optimism regarding the upcoming elections. He acknowledged that the political landscape in Delhi had shifted, noting that the Congress campaign was gaining momentum.
Gehlot expressed his belief that this election would yield different results compared to the past, with Congress making a strong comeback.
The Delhi Congress unit shared this vision on social media, reiterating that Congress’ second guarantee for the elections would be a free medical insurance cover of ₹25 lakh for every resident of Delhi.
A tweet from Vaibhav Walia, Secretary of Communications for the Indian National Congress, stressed that this health cover would be available when Congress comes to power.
This promise is part of a broader shift in Congress’ electoral strategy, which aims to cater to the welfare of all citizens, with a particular emphasis on the underprivileged sections of society.
Congress is positioning itself as the party that prioritises the health and well-being of Delhi’s residents, contrasting itself with the current government’s approach.
In an earlier statement, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai drew comparisons between the work of former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the current Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Rai praised Dikshit’s tenure, claiming that she had made substantial contributions to Delhi, while criticising Kejriwal for his lack of progress in the city. He asserted that Delhi would soon witness a change that would favour Congress, in contrast to the current administration.
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to take place on February 5, 2025, with the vote counting set for February 8. The deadline for filing nominations is January 17, followed by scrutiny of nominations on January 18, and the withdrawal of candidature on January 20.
Congress, which dominated Delhi for 15 consecutive years under the leadership of Sheila Dikshit, has suffered setbacks in the previous two elections.
In 2020, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured a resounding victory, winning 62 out of 70 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won only eight seats. The upcoming election will be a crucial test for Congress as it looks to regain its influence in the capital city.
