External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar warmly welcomed Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren to India for the India-Chile Joint Commission meeting. The meeting highlighted the strong and evolving relationship between the two nations, focusing on mutual cooperation and shared interests.

Jaishankar expressed India's deep appreciation for Chile's active participation in the Voice of Global South Summits, particularly praising Chilean President Gabriel Boric for his insightful contributions at the recent summit held on August 17.

He emphasised that Chile's involvement in these summits reflects the country's commitment to global issues and its important role in fostering international dialogue.

Reflecting on the history of the India-Chile Joint Commission, Jaishankar recalled that the previous meeting was conducted virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed his pleasure at finally being able to meet in person, underlining the importance of direct dialogue in strengthening bilateral relations.

"It’s a great pleasure to have you all here for the second India-Chile Joint Commission meeting," Jaishankar said. He also noted the significance of the discussions ahead, highlighting the opportunity to further advance cooperation between the two nations.

Jaishankar extended his gratitude to Chile for supporting India's bid for permanent membership in an expanded United Nations Security Council, recognizing it as a crucial endorsement of India’s role in global governance.

He also acknowledged Chile's participation in the Trade and Economic Ministers meeting scheduled for November 2023, appreciating the commitment to deepening economic ties between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren's visit to New Delhi marks an important moment in the bilateral relationship. Upon his arrival, he was warmly welcomed by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, who took to social media to express his optimism about the visit.

"FM Alberto Klaveren of Chile arrives to a warm welcome in New Delhi for the second India-Chile Joint Commission Meeting. An opportunity to discuss our bilateral cooperation and advance our ties further," Jaiswal stated.

Following his engagements in New Delhi, including the India-Chile Joint Commission meeting and the Chile-India Business (Agriculture) Summit, van Klaveren is set to depart for Mumbai.

His visit underscores the importance of the agricultural sector in bilateral trade, with both nations keen to explore new opportunities for collaboration in this vital area.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in a prior statement, emphasised the significance of Chile as a key partner for India in the Latin American region. The visit of Minister Klaveren provides a timely opportunity to review the progress in bilateral relations and explore new avenues for cooperation.

Both countries are eager to strengthen their ties, with a focus on enhancing economic, political, and cultural exchanges, paving the way for a more robust partnership in the future.
