External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently addressed the Indian diaspora in Geneva, emphasising the progress India has made in social justice, inclusive growth, and the rule of law. Speaking on these themes, Jaishankar underlined that these principles are central to the government's policies and reflect the country's evolving ethos.
He highlighted the tribute paid to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and the naming of a hall after Hansa Mehta, viewing these acts as symbols of modern India's dedication to social justice and gender equality.
Jaishankar’s address began with a reflection on the significance of paying homage to Dr. Ambedkar, a key architect of India's Constitution, whose statue stands outside the hall where the event took place.
He stressed that just as India is building new infrastructure abroad, like the chancery, the nation is also being built, "brick by brick," with a focus on progressive policies. He remarked that social justice and the rule of law are gaining ground, becoming cornerstones of India's governance.
The naming of a hall after Hansa Mehta, an Indian reformer and educator, was another highlight of the event. Jaishankar connected this honour to the broader concept of women-led development in India.
He recalled India's focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment during its G20 Presidency, expressing pride in how these ideals were embraced by the international community. He encouraged the diaspora to see this event as a representation of the broader changes happening within India.
Jaishankar also spoke about the current government's commitment to progress from the very start of its third term in office. He noted that it is rare for a government to be elected for three consecutive terms and that this reflects the people's faith in its vision.
With this continuity, he said, the government was well-prepared to begin its work immediately, building on the successes and learning from the shortcomings of the past terms.
He further explained how this re-election provided an opportunity to objectively assess the government's performance over the years, to ensure that lessons learned from earlier experiences would help shape the future.
This reflection, according to Jaishankar, allows for better decision-making and a stronger focus on both achievements and areas that require improvement.
Another key point in Jaishankar’s speech was the emphasis on the democratic process in India. He took pride in the way Indian elections are conducted, acknowledging the heated debates and differing opinions that arise during the election period.
However, he pointed out that, despite these disagreements, there is a remarkable readiness to accept the results, something that he noted is not always the case globally. Jaishankar praised the scale and integrity of India’s elections, calling them a democratic exercise that all Indians should take pride in.
