The Election Commission (EC) is expected to begin the process of electing India’s next Vice President following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, sources said on Tuesday. Although no formal announcement has been made yet, the move is likely to follow soon after the Union Home Ministry officially notified Dhankhar's resignation earlier in the day.
According to Article 68 of the Constitution, when a Vice President resigns, dies in office, or is removed, an election to fill the vacancy must be held “as soon as possible.” The elected candidate will serve a full five-year term, as per constitutional provisions.
Dhankhar resigned with immediate effect on Monday, citing health concerns. Until a new Vice President is elected, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh has taken charge of proceedings in the Upper House.

The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, including nominated members. As per established procedure, once the Election Commission issues a notification inviting the electoral college to vote, the entire election process—from the date of notification to polling day—must be completed within 30 days.
A candidate must be an Indian citizen, be at least 35 years old, and be eligible to run for Rajya Sabha office in order to be considered for the Vice President position. Furthermore, the candidate is not permitted to hold any profit-making position with the federal, state, local, or subordinate governments. The formal schedule and election notification are expected to be released shortly.
