The political landscape in Maharashtra is currently abuzz with preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar recently addressed the pressing concerns of various political parties regarding the scheduling of these elections.

The discussions were held during a press conference in Mumbai, where Kumar revealed that multiple parties had requested the Election Commission to consider upcoming festivals, including Diwali and Chhath Puja, when planning the election dates.

During the conference, Kumar explained that the Election Commission had met with leaders from a total of eleven political parties. This included prominent parties like the Aam Aadmi Party, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Nationalist Congress Party.

The consensus among these parties was clear: the timing of the elections should be mindful of major cultural and religious festivals to ensure maximum participation from voters.

Kumar outlined the scale of the upcoming elections, noting that Maharashtra has a significant electorate of approximately 9.59 crore registered voters, which includes about 4.59 crore males and 4.64 crore females.

The state’s assembly comprises 288 constituencies, of which 25 are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and 29 for Scheduled Castes. The current term of the Maharashtra legislative assembly will end on November 26, necessitating that the elections be conducted before this deadline.

As the election process unfolds, the political atmosphere is set for a fierce contest. The main political factions include the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, consisting of the UBT Shiv Sena, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress, and the Maha Yuti Alliance, which brings together the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction).

Both coalitions are gearing up for a challenging battle for the hearts and minds of voters in the state. In addition to scheduling concerns, Kumar also highlighted the importance of maintaining law and order during the electoral process.

He revealed that the Election Commission had sought updates on FIRs related to electoral offences from the Superintendent of Police across various districts in Maharashtra.

This step is crucial to ensure that past issues related to electoral malpractice are addressed effectively as the elections approach. Moreover, the Chief Election Commissioner directed district police officials to thoroughly review cases related to personnel, electronic voting machines, and the influence of social media on the electoral process.

Kumar emphasised the need for a swift response to any instances of misinformation circulating on social platforms, underlining the importance of credible information in the democratic process.

To enhance the voter experience on election day, Kumar outlined several measures aimed at improving the management of polling stations. District Election Officers and Superintendents of Police were instructed to ensure adequate facilities for voters, including seating arrangements, drinking water, and clear signage for directions.

This proactive approach is intended to create a smooth and organised environment for voters, allowing them to participate in the democratic process without unnecessary hindrances.

The Election Commission's efforts to engage with various stakeholders and gather input from political parties reflect a commitment to conducting free and fair elections in Maharashtra.

Kumar’s two-day visit to Mumbai is focused on reviewing the overall preparedness for the upcoming assembly elections, ensuring that all necessary arrangements are in place for a successful electoral process.
