The legal situation surrounding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been complex and highly contentious.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday, August 14, challenging his arrest and remand by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case is related to the alleged irregularities and corruption in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy. The hearing will be before a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuya.
A Delhi Court has extended the judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal, Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha, and others until September 2, 2024. The extension was granted by Special Judge Kaveri Baweja via video conference after their earlier custody period expired.
Although the Supreme Court had previously granted interim bail to Kejriwal in this case, he remains in custody at Tihar Jail as he has not furnished the required bail bond.
The allegations involve irregularities and corruption in the formulation and execution of the Delhi excise policy, which was scrapped in 2022. The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are investigating the case, with the ED arresting Kejriwal on March 21, 2024. Although he was granted bail by the trial court in June, this order was stayed by the high court.
This case has significant political implications, and the upcoming Supreme Court hearing will be crucial in determining the legal trajectory for Arvind Kejriwal.
