Farmers Protest: Police warn commuters of traffic jams, heighten security measures

Delhi Police heighten vigilance at key protest sites and transportation hubs.

Commuters in the national capital are advised to brace for potential traffic disruptions on Wednesday as farmers continue their protest, stated authorities.

Reports indicate significant congestion already observed at the Delhi-Haryana's Singhu border in the morning.

Delhi Police announced heightened vigilance at key protest sites including Tikri, Singhu, and Ghazipur borders, along with increased monitoring at railway stations, metro stations, and bus terminals.

"We've bolstered security at all three borders. While no borders or routes will be closed, thorough vehicle checks will be conducted," affirmed a police official.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram confirmed the deployment of forces at the Delhi-Haryana border, stating, "We're closely monitoring the situation following the farmers' call for action."

Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been stationed at transportation hubs anticipating the arrival of farmers via public transport like trains and buses.

"Section 144 is already in effect in Delhi. We will not tolerate any gatherings or assemblies," reiterated an officer.

Security has been tightened at prominent transportation centers including ISBT Kashmere Gate, Anand Vihar, and Sarai Kale Khan to ensure law and order.

The Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha have urged farmers nationwide to converge on Delhi on Wednesday, with further plans for a four-hour 'rail roko' agitation on March 10.

The ongoing protest intensified last month with a fatal clash between security personnel and protesters at Khanauri on the Punjab-Haryana border, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old farmer and injuries to several others.

Since their 'Delhi Chalo' march was halted by security forces in February, farmers have maintained their presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points, demonstrating against government policies and demanding legal assurances for minimum support prices on crops.
