In a significant move to protect the endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB), the Supreme Court has formed an expert committee tasked with suggesting areas for the underground laying of power transmission lines in priority and potential GIB habitats in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The court's decision comes in response to the urgent need to safeguard the GIB population, which faces threats from collisions with overhead power lines, particularly near their habitats in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Great Indian Bustard, known for its majestic stature and dwindling numbers, has been facing a grave threat due to frequent collisions with overhead power transmission lines, including those associated with solar plants. These collisions are attributed to the bird's lateral vision, making it difficult for them to avoid live wires and change their flight course.
The three-judge bench, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, has directed the expert committee to submit its recommendations by July 31, emphasising the importance of protecting the GIB habitat and ensuring the bird's conservation. The committee comprises experts from various fields, including wildlife conservation, forestry, and renewable energy.
The apex court's decision stems from a PIL filed by retired IAS officer M K Ranjitsinh and others, highlighting the imminent threat to the GIB population and the need for urgent action. The court had previously issued directives in 2021 to protect the GIB, including the replacement of overhead electric cables with underground cables and the installation of bird diverters in priority areas.
However, challenges arose regarding the feasibility of underground laying of high-power transmission lines, prompting the need for further assessment by domain experts. The newly formed expert committee will address these challenges and recommend suitable conservation measures to protect the GIB habitat.
The court's intervention underscores the critical importance of preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species like the Great Indian Bustard. By taking proactive measures to mitigate threats to GIB habitats, the judiciary reaffirms its commitment to environmental conservation and wildlife protection.
As the expert committee begins its work, stakeholders are hopeful that their recommendations will pave the way for effective conservation strategies and ensure the long-term survival of the Great Indian Bustard in its natural habitat.
