Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday criticised the central government over petrol and diesel prices, accusing it of working with oil companies to exploit the common man.

In a post on X, Gehlot highlighted the decrease in global crude oil prices over the past six months but noted that domestic fuel prices remain unchanged.

"It seems that the Government of India and the oil companies are together looting the pockets of the common man," Gehlot wrote. "If petrol and diesel prices were reduced in line with the fall in crude oil prices, petrol could be cheaper by ₹10 and diesel by ₹8 per litre."

Gehlot also claimed that Rajasthan has been doubly impacted, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promises during the state assembly elections.

"In the assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised the people that if the BJP government is formed in Rajasthan, the prices of petrol and diesel will be made equal to those in Haryana and Gujarat," Gehlot said. "The people of Rajasthan want to know when this guarantee of Modiji will be fulfilled."

Global crude oil prices have reportedly fallen by around 21% in the last six months, yet petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged in India.
