Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, unveiled the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform on Friday at the Bharat Climate Forum 2025 in New Delhi. This initiative aims to strengthen India’s cleantech value chains in solar, wind, hydrogen, and battery storage sectors.
During his address, Goyal stressed that Product Linked Incentives (PLIs) and subsidies could hinder the long-term growth and development of the clean energy sector. "The PLI scheme can only serve as a catalyst to kickstart the sector. However, the clean energy sector must work towards becoming self-reliant and independent of government support," he stated.
The Minister urged participants to think creatively and focus on scaling up manufacturing within the country. He highlighted that the Bharat Cleantech Manufacturing Platform would provide Indian firms with opportunities to collaborate, co-innovate, secure financing, and share ideas, technologies, and resources.
"This initiative will make India an attractive business destination and a global leader in the sustainability and cleantech sector," he remarked.
Goyal expressed optimism that attendees would contribute to achieving the target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi of establishing 500 gigawatts of clean energy capacity by 2030. "India has been among the top-performing nations in fulfilling the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement in 2015. We are well ahead of our targets," he noted.
He added that India had achieved its clean energy installation target for 2022 eight years ahead of schedule. "With 200 gigawatts of clean energy capacity already in place, we are on track to reach 500 gigawatts. India now boasts the largest interconnected grid in the world," he informed.
Acknowledging India’s proactive approach to addressing climate change, Goyal highlighted that Gujarat was one of the first states to embrace solar power. He credited the affordability of solar energy in India to the Prime Minister’s focus on transparency, honest auctions, fair competition, and significantly increasing the scale of implementation.
He emphasised that the government’s renewable energy programme was guided by the principles of speed, scale, and skill, under the leadership of PM Modi.
