Heavy Rains Fill Gujarat Dams to 55 Percent Capacity.

Gujarat is witnessing a dramatic shift in its water situation due to recent heavy rains, with over 55% of its dams now reaching full capacity. This notable turnaround comes after the state had previously faced severe drought conditions in many regions.

According to the latest updates from the Water Resources Department, 115 out of 206 reservoirs in Gujarat are now completely filled. In addition, 45 more reservoirs have achieved between 70% and 100% of their storage capacity. This surge in water levels has prompted many dams to be placed on high alert. Currently, 17 reservoirs are holding between 50% and 70% of their capacity.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam, which is often considered the lifeline of Gujarat, stands out with an impressive 86% of its total storage capacity now filled. The dam holds 2,88,248 Million Cubic Metres (MCM) of water, marking a significant enhancement in the state's water security.

Collectively, all 207 reservoirs in Gujarat, including the Sardar Sarovar, have achieved a combined water storage of more than 81%. This is a 5% increase compared to the same period last year, when the reservoirs were at 76% capacity.

The monsoon rains have not only alleviated drought conditions but also caused flood-like situations in various parts of the state. Gujarat has received 118% more rainfall than the seasonal average. While this has led to some short-term challenges, such as flooding, the long-term advantages for agriculture and water supply are substantial.

Regional differences in water storage are also apparent. In Central Gujarat, 17 reservoirs are at 92% capacity, while in Kutch, 20 reservoirs are at 87%. Saurashtra's 141 reservoirs are at 85% capacity, and significant improvements are noted in South Gujarat and North Gujarat as well.

In response to the increased water levels, several major dams are releasing water to manage and maintain safe levels. The Sardar Sarovar Project is discharging 2.45 lakh cusecs of water against an inflow of 2.35 lakh cusecs. Similar measures are being undertaken at other reservoirs such as Wanakbori, Ukai, Kadana, and Panam.
