Gujarat Government to Enhance Library Services Statewide.

The Gujarat government is taking significant steps to promote reading and enhance access to books across the state. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, a major initiative has been launched to establish government libraries in 50 talukas across 21 districts.

This move builds on the legacy of the ‘Vanche Gujarat’ campaign, which was started by then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The campaign emphasised the importance of reading and aimed to enrich libraries with valuable literature.

This decision coincides with the celebration of National Read a Book Day on September 6, a day dedicated to encouraging people to engage more deeply with reading. The aim is to celebrate the joy of reading and motivate individuals to develop a reading habit.

The new libraries will be established not only in urban areas but also in tribal and rural regions. The government plans to set up libraries in 14 talukas across seven tribal districts.

This effort is intended to foster a love for reading among tribal communities and ensure they have access to essential reading resources. With this initiative, every tribal community in Gujarat will benefit from improved access to books and learning materials.

In addition to these efforts, the Gujarat government is focusing on expanding library services in rural areas. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's administration has committed to increasing the number of subsidised libraries this year.

This historic decision marks one of the largest expansions of library services in Gujarat's history. The goal is to make public libraries more accessible to reading enthusiasts across the state.

To support the growth and development of public libraries, a new policy has been introduced. This policy includes accreditation and grants-in-aid to foster the establishment and improvement of libraries throughout Gujarat.

The government has also decided to fully fund libraries by covering the 25 percent public contribution previously required. Additionally, the grant rates will be increased based on the type of library, such as special libraries, city libraries, women and children’s libraries, and village libraries.

Moreover, the Gujarat government has enhanced the award scheme for libraries and librarians. The Shree Motibhai Amin Granthalaya Seva Award and Uttam Granthalaya Seva Certificate have been updated to include categories for expert and special libraries. This aims to foster a competitive spirit and encourage excellence in library services among state-aided libraries.
