Social activist Anna Hazare, known for his role in the anti-corruption movement, expressed disappointment over Arvind Kejriwal's arrest in connection with an excise policy-related case, highlighting his past warnings to the Delhi Chief Minister to abstain from such matters.
Hazare, who led the Lokpal movement alongside Kejriwal in the early 2010s, disclosed that he had cautioned Kejriwal against delving into excise policy issues, highlighting that their focus should not involve such matters.
Speaking from his village Ralegan Siddhi in Maharashtra, Hazare reiterated his stance against alcohol consumption and lamented Kejriwal's alleged pursuit of financial gain through the policy.
“I had told him that our job is not to make excise policy. Even a small child knows that liquor is bad. I had asked him to stay away from this (excise policy) issue. But he went ahead and made the policy,” Hazare said.
Expressing regret over the turn of events, Hazare revealed that he had communicated his concerns to Kejriwal twice on the adverse implications of involving oneself in such policies.
“He thought that he would earn more money and that is why he made this policy. I felt sad and wrote to him twice. I felt sad that a person like Kejriwal, who once worked with me and raised our voice against alcohol, is now making the excise policy,” Hazare lamented.
He attributed Kejriwal's arrest by the Enforcement Directorate to his actions, stating that had Kejriwal refrained from such endeavours, his arrest would not have transpired.
“He got arrested due to his deeds. Had he not done anything, there was no question of his being arrested. Now law will take its course and the government will do the needful,” Hazare said.
In 2022, social activist Anna Hazare penned a scathing letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, criticising the government's newly implemented excise policy.
Hazare expressed deep concern, suggesting that it appeared the CM had become "ensnared in the allure of power."
He had further voiced apprehension that the new policy might inadvertently promote the sale and consumption of alcohol, potentially fueling corruption, thus contradicting their shared ideologies.
Kejriwal was detained overnight at the Enforcement Directorate office in central Delhi following his arrest in connection with the money laundering case linked to the excise policy on Thursday.
