A severe heatwave is sweeping across several Indian states. Jharkhand, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, and Maharashtra are experiencing extreme temperatures. The mercury has soared well above normal levels, prompting warnings from authorities.

Temperatures in Jharkhand have crossed 40°C in multiple districts. On Saturday, Chaibasa in West Singhbhum recorded 41°C, which is 7.6°C above normal. Other areas such as Daltonganj (40.7°C), Bokaro Thermal (40.1°C), and Jamshedpur (40°C) also experienced extreme heat. Ranchi recorded 37°C, which is 6.1°C higher than usual. Garhwa, Godda, and Pakur are also under the grip of the heatwave.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow alert for heatwaves in Seraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Dhanbad, and Bokaro for 16 March. Relief is expected from 19 March, with the IMD predicting rain and thunderstorms.

North Interior Karnataka is also witnessing extreme heat. Ainapur Hobli village in Kalaburagi recorded the highest temperature in the last 24 hours at 42.8°C. Other districts, including Raichur, Bidar, Bagalkote, Yadgir, and Vijayapura, have also recorded temperatures above 40°C.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has advised people to take precautions. He urged residents to avoid outdoor activities between 12 pm and 3 pm. The IMD forecasts a further temperature rise of 2-4°C between 15-17 March. A heatwave warning is in place for 18-19 March.

A severe heatwave has hit West Bengal, affecting western districts such as Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Paschim Bardhaman, and Birbhum.

On Saturday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 26.3°C, which is 3.7°C above normal. The maximum temperature reached 34.1°C, five degrees above average. The IMD expects the heatwave to persist until 18 March. Relief is likely after 20 March, with possible rain or thundershowers.

Odisha is also experiencing severe heatwave conditions. Jharsuguda recorded 41.8°C on Friday, making it one of the hottest places in the state.

The IMD has issued warnings for multiple districts, including Sambalpur and Mayurbhanj. Temperatures have crossed 40°C in Angul, Bolangir, and Titlagarh. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely.

Maharashtra, particularly the Vidarbha region, has been enduring prolonged heatwave conditions since early February. Chandrapur recorded 41.4°C on Saturday, making it one of the hottest places in India.

Other areas, including Bramhapuri, Solapur, and Wardha, also crossed 41°C. Low humidity has intensified the discomfort. Many areas in Vidarbha are experiencing temperatures 3-6°C above normal. No immediate relief is expected, and the heatwave is set to continue.

Advisory for public safety

Authorities have issued public safety advisories as the heatwave continues. Residents are urged to avoid direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing. Prolonged outdoor exposure should be avoided, especially during peak hours.

Heat-related illnesses are common in extreme conditions. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, should stay indoors and stay hydrated.

As temperatures rise, the public is advised to remain cautious and follow official guidance. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and provide updates on weather conditions.
