Himachal Pradesh is making significant strides toward becoming India’s first "Green Energy" state, with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reaffirming the government’s commitment to renewable energy development.
By December 2025, the state aims to generate 72 MW of solar power through multiple projects across different districts.
The Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited has already started work on two solar power projects in Una district. One project at Gondpur Bulla has a capacity of 12 MW, while another at Lamlahri Uparli will generate 11 MW.
Additionally, three major projects are underway in Solan district, including a 13 MW unit at Saned in Nalagarh, an 8 MW unit at Bara Barot, and another 13 MW project at Dabhota Majra.
The tender process for a 9 MW project at Dabhota One is nearing completion, and work will begin soon. A 6 MW solar power project at Tihra Khas in Una district is also in the tendering phase, with an award expected this month.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s vision of making Himachal Pradesh a leader in renewable energy by 2026.
The state has initiated surveys for eight additional solar power projects with a combined capacity of 325 MW. Once detailed project reports are prepared, construction will commence, further strengthening the state’s clean energy infrastructure.
CM Sukhu stated that transitioning to green energy would significantly reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability. He emphasised that renewable energy is an inexhaustible resource, ensuring a steady energy supply for future generations.
By prioritising clean energy, the government aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and enhance energy security.
The state has already made considerable progress in solar power generation. A 32 MW solar power project at Pekhubela in Una district was inaugurated on 15 April 2024. This project has produced 48 million units of electricity, generating revenue of ₹14 crore as of 31 January 2025.
Another 5 MW solar project at Bhanjal in Una district became operational on 30 November 2024, while construction of a 10 MW solar project at Aghlaur is expected to be completed this month.
Beyond solar power, the government is also focusing on green hydrogen energy. A 1 MW green hydrogen project has been initiated in Nalagarh, Solan district, in collaboration with Oil India Limited.
The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the company to advance clean energy initiatives.
