The national capital and its surrounding areas, including Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad, experienced light rainfall today, bringing a wintry chill to the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted such weather conditions in its weekly report.
Delhi is witnessing a minimum temperature of 8°C today, with the maximum expected to hover around 17°C. However, the IMD has forecast a slight rise in the minimum temperature to 11°C tomorrow, offering some respite from the cold.
Despite the rainfall, the air quality in many parts of Delhi remains a grave concern. Areas such as Alipur, Bawana, Jahangirpuri, ITO, Nehru Nagar, and RK Puram are reporting hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) levels exceeding 450.
Health experts are urging residents to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and use air purifiers indoors to mitigate the effects of severe pollution. Vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, are advised to take extra precautions.
In addition to Delhi's weather updates, the IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for Tamil Nadu. The southern state is expected to experience intense rainfall on January 12, with thunderstorms and lightning predicted in isolated areas.
Meanwhile, the northernmost parts of India, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, are enduring freezing temperatures and severe cold wave conditions.
Himachal Pradesh is likely to see frost and freezing temperatures, prompting authorities to issue warnings to residents and travellers.
Dense fog conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, East Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan during the late-night and early morning hours from January 11 to 13. These foggy conditions could disrupt visibility, causing potential challenges for commuters.
Similar conditions are anticipated in Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and some parts of Himachal Pradesh.
A fresh western disturbance is expected to bring thunderstorms and hailstorms to various regions, including West Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and East Rajasthan.
The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on January 13 and 14.
Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have been advised to avoid venturing into the Gulf of Mannar and the adjoining Comorin area on January 11 and 12 due to rough sea conditions.
In Delhi, light rain or drizzle is likely during the morning hours over the next two days, as per the IMD. The temperature in the city dipped to as low as 1°C in the past 24 hours.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are predicted to range between 18°C to 22°C and 6°C to 8°C, respectively, in the coming days.
The weather and air quality updates reflect the diverse climatic conditions currently affecting different parts of the country. Authorities continue to issue advisories to ensure public safety, urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
