India Aims to Boost Share of Global Milk Production to One-Third by 2030

According to NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah, India presently contributes 24% or one-quarter of the global milk production, contributing 4-5% to the GDP. The objective is to elevate this global share to 30% or one-third by the year 2030.

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) is actively pursuing a goal to increase India's milk production, aiming to account for one-third of global output by 2030, according to chairman Meenesh Shah. Shah emphasised that enhancing animal productivity through initiatives focused on breeding, nutrition, and health is essential to reaching this ambitious target. Despite being the world's largest milk producer, India's animal productivity lags behind that of developed nations.

"India currently contributes 24 per cent of total world milk production, contributing 4-5 per cent to our GDP. Our plan is to increase the share globally to 30 per cent by 2030," he said. To address this gap, the NDDB is collaborating with the Indian government to bolster productivity. Shah highlighted the importance of maintaining India's impressive growth rate in milk production, which has been averaging 6 per cent annually over the past several years, significantly outpacing the global average of 2 per cent.

In Assam, the NDDB has established a joint venture with the state government to support comprehensive development in the dairy sector. The partnership aims to increase milk procurement and expand the cooperative movement by engaging more farmers over the next seven years.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to enhance the infrastructure of the West Assam Milk Producers Cooperative Society (WAMUL), which operates the well-known Purabi brand, including scaling up production capacity with the inauguration of a new plant.

Additionally, the NDDB is prioritising the adoption of solar and other renewable energy sources to minimise environmental impact and promote sustainability in the dairy industry.
