India and Australia have reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism through enhanced international cooperation. This stance was underscored at the 14th meeting of the India-Australia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism held in Delhi on August 12.
Both nations expressed strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and emphasised the need for a sustained and comprehensive approach to counter this global threat.
KD Dewal, Joint Secretary for Counter-Terrorism at India's Ministry of External Affairs, and Richard Feakes, Australia’s Ambassador for Counter-Terrorism, led their respective delegations in the discussions. The meeting highlighted the importance of addressing terrorism not only through bilateral cooperation but also through international forums.
The discussions covered a wide range of issues including the threat assessments of terrorism on domestic, regional, and global scales. Key topics included the misuse of emerging technologies by terrorists, the use of the internet for radicalization and terror financing, and the links between organised crime and terrorism.
Both countries also explored ways to address these challenges through various international platforms such as the United Nations, the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD).
A significant aspect of the talks was the agreement to hold the 15th meeting of the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism in Canberra at a mutually convenient time.
This continued dialogue is a crucial part of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting both nations’ commitment to strengthening global counter-terrorism efforts.
In addition to counter-terrorism, the sixth India-Maritime Security Dialogue took place earlier in Canberra. This meeting focused on maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment that supports inclusive growth and global well-being.
The ongoing cooperation between India and Australia highlights their joint efforts to tackle terrorism and ensure regional and global security. By working together and engaging in international cooperation, both countries aim to address the multifaceted challenges posed by terrorism and contribute to a safer world.
