Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday sharpened his attack on the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, warning that action would be taken against the chief election commissioner and his fellow commissioners if the INDIA bloc came to power at the Centre.

Speaking at a gathering in Gayaji during the Voter Adhikar Yatra, Gandhi accused the poll body of facilitating “vote chori” and said the EC had no moral authority to seek an affidavit from him.

“I want to tell the EC that the whole country will ask you to give an affidavit. Give us some time, we will catch your theft in every assembly and Lok Sabha seat, and put it before the people,” he said.

Referring to the SIR exercise, he added, “Like PM Modi talks of a special package, the EC has brought a special package for Bihar named SIR, which means a new form of vote theft.” Tejashwi Yadav, who accompanied the Congress leader, also accused the commission of acting at the behest of the ruling party.

Gandhi said the people of Bihar would make it clear that “vote chori cannot be done in this state”. “Whatever I say, I do it… A day will come when there will be an INDIA bloc government in Bihar and in Delhi; then we will take action against the three of you. You’ve stolen (vote) from the whole country,” he told the gathering.

The comments come a day after Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar gave Gandhi a seven-day deadline to submit an affidavit backing his allegations, warning that otherwise his remarks would be treated as baseless and void.

Kumar, in his first press conference since the vote-chori allegations were levelled, said Gandhi must either apologise or furnish the affidavit in line with electoral rules.
