India intercepted Pak’s nuclear-capable Shaheen missile: Report

The Indian Army on Sunday confirmed that Pakistan launched a nuclear-capable Shaheen missile at India during the intense shelling that followed the country’s Operation Sindoor.

The missile was intercepted mid-air by India’s advanced S-400 air defence system, averting potential damage, according to reports from NDTV and India Today.

The confirmation came with the release of a powerful video by the Indian Army’s Western Command, featuring visuals from Operation Sindoor, the Pakistani missile strike, and India’s successful interception. The footage captures the scale of the ongoing conflict, highlighting India’s swift military response.

The Shaheen missile, a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads, was reportedly armed with a non-nuclear payload, but its use has raised serious concerns among defence analysts.

The missile, developed by Pakistan, has a range of up to 2,500 kilometres and can carry multiple types of warheads, making it one of the most potent assets in Pakistan’s arsenal.

NDTV, citing Indian Army sources reported that, the missile was intercepted by the S-400 Triumf system, a Russian-made defence system known for its long-range and precision.

The S-400, which India acquired from Russia in 2021, is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems in the world. It is capable of tracking and neutralising a wide range of aerial threats, including ballistic missiles, fighter jets, and drones.

“The S-400 system is a critical component of India’s multi-layered air defence shield, capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising incoming threats at various ranges,” a senior defence official said.

Alongside the missile interception, the Indian Army released a dramatic video showcasing the ongoing Operation Sindoor, a large-scale military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. The video shows Indian military units striking terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, including satellite images depicting the ‘before and after’ destruction of Pakistani airbases.

The Army lauded its troops, referring to them as an “impregnable wall of fire” for their resilience and bravery during the intense cross-border exchanges. One soldier, speaking in the video, said, “This (Operation Sindoor) started with the Pahalgam attack. It is not anger but a resolve to teach a lesson that will be remembered in the future. It is justice, not revenge.”

The Indian strikes on May 7 triggered a strong response from Pakistan, including heavy artillery shelling and missile attacks. Despite a brief ceasefire agreement covering land, air, and sea operations, the Indian Army stated on Sunday that Pakistan violated the truce within hours of its announcement. However, the Army clarified that the ceasefire remains in place, with no expiry date, signalling India’s willingness to de-escalate if Pakistan refrains from further provocations.
