India is actively participating in the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), which commenced on 10 March 2025 at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Indian delegation is being led by Smt. Annpurna Devi, Union Minister for Women and Child Development.
The session focuses on reviewing and assessing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on its 30th anniversary. This global framework remains one of the most significant commitments to achieving gender equality and empowering women.
The discussions also analyse the progress made and the challenges faced in realising the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
On 10 March, Smt. Annpurna Devi delivered India’s national statement at the Ministerial Forum, reaffirming the government’s dedication to empowering women and children.
She emphasised India’s commitment to ensuring their protection, holistic development, and access to opportunities.
She highlighted the country’s progress across 12 critical areas of gender equality, showcasing key initiatives that have significantly improved health, nutrition, education, and economic prospects for women and children.
The Minister underlined the transformative impact of flagship government schemes, which have played a vital role in uplifting women and girls. She stressed the importance of strengthening outreach and implementation to ensure that every woman and child in India receives their rights and entitlements.
She reiterated that the welfare of women and children is central to India’s development and that the government is committed to creating an inclusive environment where they can thrive.
The 69th session of UNCSW has brought together representatives from all UN member states, intergovernmental organisations, the private sector, philanthropists, academia, civil society groups, women’s organisations, and UN agencies.
Their collective engagement underscores the global commitment to advancing gender equality.
UNCSW is the principal intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting the rights and empowerment of women worldwide. As a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it plays a key role in shaping policies and strategies to address gender disparities.
The ongoing session, which will continue until 21 March 2025, provides a crucial platform for global dialogue and collaboration to drive meaningful progress towards a more equal and inclusive society.
