India successfully launches INSAT-3DS satellite for enhanced weather monitoring

A Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle, GSLV-F14, carrying INSAT-3DS satellite lifts off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR), in Sriharikota on Saturday.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved another milestone on Saturday with the successful launch of the INSAT-3DS meteorological satellite onboard the Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV-F14).

This marks the 16th mission for the GSLV series and signifies a significant step forward in India's Earth observation capabilities.

The massive 51.7-meter tall GSLV-F14 rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, carrying the 2,274 kg INSAT-3DS satellite towards its designated orbit.

The launch was met with thunderous applause from gathered spectators, marking a proud moment for the Indian space program.

The INSAT-3DS satellite, weighing 2,274 kg, is designed to enhance weather monitoring and forecasting capabilities.

It will serve various departments under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, including the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). It aims to achieve several key objectives:

  • Enhanced Meteorological Observations: INSAT-3DS will provide detailed observations of the Earth's surface, oceans, and atmosphere, contributing to improved weather forecasting.

  • Data Collection and Dissemination: The satellite will relay data from automated platforms and weather stations, strengthening forecasting capabilities.

  • Search and Rescue Support: The satellite's Search and Rescue transponder will assist in locating distress signals and aiding in rescue operations.
